From Cold War Berlin to the legal leadership of MI5 and MI6, David Bickford spent his career working where intelligence operations, national security, law and human consequence meet.

law at the cold war front line
David served as a legal adviser within the British Military Government in West Berlin, working inside one of the most politically sensitive cities in the world.
Here, law was never abstract. Border crossings, diplomatic decisions and encounters between East and West carried genuine human and political consequences. Berlin placed David at the point where legal judgement, intelligence and Cold War strategy met.

LEGAL JUDGEMENT INSIDE INTELLIGENCE.
David went on to become Legal Director of MI5 and MI6, operating at the intersection of intelligence, national security and the law.
The position required more than legal knowledge. It demanded judgement under pressure, an understanding of operational reality and the ability to weigh national security against consequence, responsibility and the rule of law.

David was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), a British order of chivalry recognising distinguished public service. The honour acknowledged a career spent advising government at the intersection of law, intelligence and national security.
After leaving government service, David continued his international consultancy work. He advised the Commonwealth Institute, the Cayman Islands, Mauritius and other offshore financial centres on countering money laundering, drawing on his experience of intelligence, regulation and organised crime.
He has also contributed evidence to Parliament and delivered lectures for the United Nations.

Before turning to fiction, David spent decades working in environments where information was incomplete, loyalties were complicated and decisions carried real consequences.
